This studio inquires about two aspects of the nowadays landscape design process. First, it challenges the traditional client-designer relationship and emphasizes on a community-oriented design method. Besides, as it may take years for a proposal to build up in the traditional landscape design, the studio keeps an eye on what's also practical before the tedious construction period as a transition to benefit the urban environment and community.

In the first phase, students as groups organize public engagement events to gather information and advice about Downtown Fall River from the public. In the next stage, each student works individually to develop a pop-up proposal to revitalize downtown. Based on feedback from previous events, I choose kids living in Fall River as my target and propose a hybrid reality treasure-hunting game as my pop-up design. This game includes a mascot as the character, pocket green spaces as the game’s site, and a treasure-locating system as the game rules. In this way, I aim to cultivate people rethinking about the streetscape and hope this game could be the beginning of a kid-friendly downtown Fall River in the future.

Public Engagement

In the first phase, students as groups organize public engagement events to gather information and advice about Downtown Fall River from the public. These public events include precedent matching, questionnaires, story snitching in the Fabric Festival, and interactive models, for which I'm responsible, in Kids-a-palooza.
